Daily Missions

Turning the Rewards experience into a daily learning and engagement loop

Role: Product Designer
Company: Filimo School
Scope: Product Strategy · UX Design · UI Design · Data Analysis
Platform: Mobile

Overview

The Rewards experience on Filimo School needed a stronger reason for users to return regularly.

I identified an opportunity to turn rewards from a mostly passive destination into an active engagement loop: users could complete meaningful learning activities, earn points, and return the next day for new challenges.

I introduced Daily Missions as a new layer within the Rewards experience, designed the mission system from the ground up, and restructured the page around two core experiences: Missions and Leaderboard.

I also built a performance dashboard to measure how users interacted with the new feature after launch and used the resulting data to understand engagement, completion, retention, and mission-level performance.

The Opportunity

The existing Rewards experience provided users with a destination for rewards and competition, but it lacked a structured mechanism that encouraged users to take action every day.

The opportunity was to connect the activities users were already doing on Filimo School with a simple reward system:

Learn → Complete a mission → Earn points → Progress → Come back tomorrow

The challenge was designing a system that could work for both quick daily engagement and deeper learning activities.

Introducing Daily Missions

I designed Daily Missions as a progressive set of tasks that reward users for engaging with different parts of Filimo School.

Rather than presenting every task with the same weight, missions were ordered from lower to higher difficulty, allowing users to start with simple actions and progressively work toward more valuable rewards.

The mission set included:

Mission

Reward

Visit Filimo School daily

20 pts

Watch a textbook video

20 pts

Watch a skills-course video

20 pts

Watch a certified skills-course video

20 pts

Complete a textbook lesson

50 pts

Watch three skills-course videos

100 pts

Complete three textbook lessons

150 pts

Earn a skills certificate

1,000 pts

This created a progression from low-effort engagement to high-value learning achievements.

Designing the Mission States

A core part of the system was making progress immediately understandable.

Each mission has three states:

Not Started

The mission is available and ready for the user to complete.

Ready to Claim

The user has completed the required action and can collect the reward.

Claimed

The reward has already been collected.

The missions reset every night, creating a fresh set of opportunities for users to engage with the platform the following day.

I also added a “How can I earn points?” entry point to explain the reward system and help users understand how they can accumulate points beyond individual missions.

Restructuring the Rewards Experience

The new Rewards experience was organized around two primary tabs:

Missions

The new daily engagement layer, where users can discover tasks, track their progress, and collect rewards.

Leaderboard

The competitive layer, where users can see the current leaderboard and view the previous week's winners.

This separation gave each experience a clear purpose while making Missions the primary action-oriented destination.

Making Reward Collection Effortless

One of the interaction challenges was handling multiple completed missions.

A user could potentially have several missions in the Ready to Claim state at the same time. Requiring them to open and claim each reward individually would add unnecessary friction.

I designed a bulk-claim interaction:

  1. The user taps any mission that is ready to claim.

  2. All currently available mission rewards are collected simultaneously.

  3. A bottom sheet appears with a summary of every reward collected.

  4. The missions transition to their claimed state.

This turns several repetitive actions into a single interaction while making the reward moment more visible.

Measuring the Feature

Because Daily Missions was a new engagement mechanism, I also built a dashboard to understand whether users were actually returning, completing missions, and building habits around the feature.

The initial analysis covered December 2–15, 2024 and tracked Daily Mission DAU, retention, participation frequency, completion rate, streaks, and mission-level statistics.

Initial results

Metric

Value

Daily Mission DAU over the 12-day period

31,204

7-day retention

18%

12-day retention

13%

Frequency of participation

1.82

Mission completion rate

48%

Average mission streak

5.5 days

These metrics provided an initial view of how effectively the new system was driving repeated engagement.

Understanding Mission Performance

The dashboard also allowed me to compare individual mission types.

The data showed substantial differences between lightweight engagement missions and deeper learning activities. For example, the daily visit generated 219,873 claims, while completing three textbook lessons generated 11,986, and earning a skills certificate generated 1,871.

This reinforced the value of having a progressive mission structure: low-effort missions can create an accessible entry point, while more demanding missions provide longer-term goals and significantly larger rewards.

The certificate mission, for example, rewarded 1,000 points, compared with 20 points for several entry-level missions.

Final Solution

The final design consisted of three key experiences:

01 — Missions

A new daily mission experience within Rewards, with progressive difficulty, clear states, and daily refresh.

02 — Leaderboard

A dedicated competitive experience for viewing current rankings and previous winners.

03 — Claim Reward

A bottom sheet that consolidates all available rewards into a single claim interaction and clearly communicates what the user has earned.

Impact

Daily Missions established a new engagement loop within Filimo School by connecting learning activities with immediate rewards and repeat participation.

During the initial measurement period, the feature reached 31,204 Daily Mission DAU, achieved a 48% mission completion rate, and users with streaks averaged 5.5 consecutive days.
More importantly, the project established a measurable framework for understanding which missions encouraged lightweight engagement versus deeper learning behavior.

What I Learned

This project showed me the value of treating a feature as a product system rather than a collection of screens.

The work started with an engagement opportunity and extended across the entire lifecycle:

Opportunity → Mission Design → Reward Mechanics → UX/UI → Launch → Measurement

Designing the mission hierarchy, defining its states, simplifying reward collection, and building the analytics dashboard allowed me to think beyond the interface and shape how the feature would actually drive behavior.

The core principle was simple:

Give users a clear action, make progress visible, and give them a reason to come back tomorrow.
